In a line that wrapped around the corner, fans of the Beatle-esque pop group waited in the cold winter air of Times Square before the show. Awaiting the fans was a five song lineup of beautiful ballads, a warm buffet, the down to earth Plain White T’s, and the opportunity to get a picture with the band at a meet and greet after the show. Each person in line won a spot on the guest list to this private show from PLJ.
In a beautiful and melodic acoustic performance, the Plain White T’s strummed the following songs:
Their striking harmonies reached an appreciative audience who watched the show with rapturous applause at the completion of each song. PLJ’s DJ Race Taylor asked the Plain White T’s questions from the audience between songs, including one from WebSong:
“At what moment did you realize you made it big?”
Rather than realizing the band’s success through achieving a number one hit in ten countries or Grammy and MTV music award nominations, lead singer Tom Higgenson interestingly recounted that he realized his success when fans told him that they played his music at weddings and funerals:
“Sometimes when we talk to a person at a show, they say a song of ours means so much to them that they are going to use it in a wedding. Or we have one song called Radios in Heaven that we always hear people have played at a funeral. You know, things like that make you think ‘Wow, our songs mean so much to people.’ That they’re not just songs they turn on on the radio; they’re songs that they actually take into their everyday lives and I think that’s the big success.”
But as far as the Plain White T’s are concerned, they’re just entering their wonder years. And fans agree; at the end of the show, one fan described the band with a modified lyric from their hit single Hey There Delilah: “Times Square can’t shine as bright as the Plain White T’s!”
